Edmonton Remand Centre
The new Edmonton Remand Centre is the largest public building project ever undertaken by the Government of Alberta. It will also be the largest correctional facility in Canada. The new facility will replace the 27-year-old Edmonton Remand Centre located in downtown Edmonton.
- The new facility will house up to 1,952 inmates and alleviate overcrowding at the current remand facility.
- The selected site is 16 hectares. The total area of the facility is 59,511m2.
- The new Remand Centre will look like a modern low-rise office building complex.
- The design allows landscaping to be used as an effective buffer.
- Enclosed exercise yards and exterior lighting that is directed toward the facility will minimize the impact on the neighborhood.
- The new Remand Centre is wired and readily adaptable to house the latest technology and sophisticated security features such as video technology with high-tech cameras. The facility will also be connected to an offsite video visitation centre for family visits.
- The facility will have 53 video arraignment courts, which will facilitate a direct link to the courts throughout the province. This will significantly reduce the need to transport the accused back to the location they were originally charged for court appearances.
- The facility is built to ensure the safety of public, staff and inmates by reducing the need for prisoner transfer within and outside of the facility.
- The facility is targeting LEED silver certification.
